Having just received around 30 of these spam messages in my comments, which are, I believe posted by computer software of some sort, I have added the "word verification" option for when comments are posted. There is no comment moderation of any sort nor is there a necessity to be registered. I was simply informed that this was the best way to fix the problem of spam! Apologies for any inconvenience.

I had to do that this morning too. It's a shame because I hate word verification myself but I have been inundated this week with spam for the first time in 9 months.
Steven, I respectfully take the other point of view - word verification is the last thing I'll put on becasue it is deeply annoying to commenters. Moderation is good if one regularly checks.
I agree that word verification is a dreadful pain. But I had to do it. I was online pretty much all day the other day, and within the space of half an hour, another 10 spam messages arrived. I can't keep spending all my time watching it! It is, rather like government itself, a necessary evil!
